Peer Storage Architecture Peer Storage Architecture'Peer' describes the collaboration and equal partnership of a single, simple architecture. Arrays function as peers and work together to optimize utilization of SAN resources including cache, disks, network and I/O (input/output). This unique cooperation enables the even distribution of workloads, application performance optimization and comprehensive data protection. Rapid Provisioning The intelligence of virtual storage provisioning combined with the modular design of PS Series storage arrays enable you to quickly and easily expand storage capacity without affecting data availability. You can start with a single storage array, and as storage, performance and network requirements grow, add more members to help increase capacity, performance and network bandwidth. Automatic Load Balancing EqualLogic load-balancing automatically balances workloads with seamless distribution of data across multiple active storage resources. The result is optimized performance and availability of network connections, cache, controllers and drives. Storage Pools Within a single SAN, storage pooling provides the ability to create sub-groups of arrays that enable you to configure and prioritize applications for the required level of service. You can configure separate storage pools within a single SAN to help build an efficient, flexible, easy-to-manage storage environment. Point-in-time Replication EqualLogic point-in-time replication remotely replicates data from one PS group to another over a standard IP network over long distances. This safeguards your organization with high levels of data protection and disaster tolerance. Synchronous Replication Synchronous Replication (Sync Rep) maintains two identical copies of a volume in two different storage pools within the same PS Series group for real-time data protection and assurance that a viable, hardware-independent copy of the volume is always available. Data Center Bridging Data Center Bridging (DCB) is designed to improve quality of service with consistent and even traffic flow in a converged 10Gb Ethernet SAN/LAN networking fabric. Access Control Policies Access Control Policies enable or restrict host access to volumes and storage objects and allow users to set and reuse policies. This feature provides an efficient alternative to single volume Access Control Lists, helping you to improve scalability and simplify management by reducing administration tasks. GUI with search feature This GUI includes a search/find function to help you speed up common administration tasks. This function is useful in larger PS Series storage environments with many managed objects such as volumes. |
EqualLogic Group Manager EqualLogic Group Manager helps you simplify and streamline storage administration and allows you to manage EqualLogic PS Series block arrays and FS Series NAS appliances through a single unified storage interface. This GUI helps eliminate the need for a dedicated management workstation or server and allows you to remotely manage virtually any aspect of your PS Series unified storage solution. The EqualLogic Group Manager is also available as a command-line interface (CLI) which enables scripting with either Perl or Python.

EqualLogic™ Host Integration Tools for VMware (HIT/VMware) tightly integrate the EqualLogic PS Series arrays and FS Series FluidFS appliances with VMware® vSphere®, enabling consistent data protection, performance optimization and streamlined management and operations. HIT/VMware consists of the Dell Virtual Storage Manager for VMware (VSM), the EqualLogic vSphere API for Storage Awareness (VASA) Provider, the EqualLogic Storage Replication Adapter for VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRA SRM), the EqualLogic Adapter for VMware vRealize Operations (formerly vCenter® Operations Manager) and the EqualLogic Multipath I/O (MPIO). VSM 4.5 is a component of HIT/VMware that provides efficiency, performance and data protection for Dell EqualLogic PS series storage while enabling additional functions and tasks that can be applied to VMware objects. VSM is integrated into VMware’s updated vSphere Web Client with convenient access to VSM functionality from many context sensitive menus.
The following are the new features in VSM 4.5:
| |
Enablement of VMware Virtual Volumes
| |
Consistent data protection with VSM and traditional datastores VSM offers high-performance, space-efficient data protection of VMware VMs and datastores within folders and clusters. It enables you to perform VM-based snapshot and restore operations in addition to traditional datastore-based snapshot, restore, failover and failback operations on Dell EqualLogic PS Groups. VSM enables users to configure replication from top to bottom all in a single interface. Version 4.5 enhances the historical view of system and data protection scheduling with scheduling templates that may be used for both snapshot and replication operations. The resulting snapshots, replicas and clones can now be more easily and rapidly created, managed and recovered. All of these features allow VSM to enhance the protection, storage utilization and performance of VMware-based virtual infrastructures. Storage Recovery Replicas provide a simplified storage recovery solution across single and multi-site vCenter installations managing multiple EqualLogic groups. This feature delivers a simpler mechanism for replication of one or more datastores that can be stored on one or more PS series groups to a secondary PS series group, potentially at a geographically remote location, using just one VSM and vCenter server for disaster tolerance. VSM also offers recovery from replicas on secondary sites, including failover and failback of virtual machines and their data. VSM>Datastore Management Managing datastores has traditionally been a tedious process because IT managers have had to separately provision volumes in the array and then create and manage datastores in vSphere. VSM unifies these two steps into one UI by automating storage provisioning, thereby simplifying the datastore creation and management process. You can create, manage, and monitor datastores on Dell EqualLogic PS Series and FS Series arrays from within a single VSM table. Datastore management can:

EqualLogic VASA Provider EqualLogic VASA (vSphere API for Storage Awareness) Provider tightly integrates EqualLogic with vSphere, providing an end-to-end storage capability view of EqualLogic storage in the vSphere UI. This provides better storage allocation and management, all from a familiar interface. Through this integration with VSM, Dell EqualLogic PS series arrays can pass storage attributes, alarms and events to VMware vSphere, so you can view additional details about the storage array’s capabilities, including:

EqualLogic Storage Replication Adapter for VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRA SRM) EqualLogic SRA SRM integrates VMware vCenter SRM with EqualLogic storage arrays through vStorage APIs and offers centralized automated disaster recovery management, automation and testing for the entire virtualized data center. With SRA SRM, VMware SRM utilizes the EqualLogic SAN-based replication feature, making disaster recovery manageable, reliable and affordable. EqualLogic Adapter for vRealize Operations Manager The EqualLogic Adapter for vRealize Operations (formerly vCenter Operations) Manager integrates EqualLogic storage with vCenter Operations Management Suite. This integration allows vRealize Operations to assimilate EqualLogic storage metrics in its operations management tasks. Through this integration, VMware administrators can gain comprehensive insights on the capacity, performance and health of EqualLogic storage with alerts and metrics provided by the adapter. This allows administrators to incorporate EqualLogic storage into their overall IT operations and management practices, and helps simplify infrastructure complexity. It also enables administrators to perform long-term>EqualLogic MPIO enables intelligent and dynamic routing of your iSCSI SAN traffic load over multiple network paths between the server and the EqualLogic PS series group. It provides increased bandwidth, reduced network latency, automatic connection management, failover and load balancing. |
