Key Features

Key features introduced in firmware release 8.0

Compression of Snapshots & Replicas:
Supports the compression of cold snapshot pages and replicas. It can be used in a PS Series pool that consists of at least one PS6210 or PS6610 array. These same arrays also provide additional virtual storage.
Delegated Space in Multiple Pools:
Allows administrators to assign delegated space for a single replication partner in multiple pools.
Space Borrowing with Replication:
Helps ensure data protection by enabling volume snapshots to borrow not only from unused snapshot reserves and the free pool, but also from replica reserve and delegated space. It also enables replicas to borrow from other replicas reserves, delegated space and snapshot reserves as needed.
Default Daily Snapshot:
Provides a global, daily snapshot schedule that is executed on unprotected volumes read-write volumes with snapshot reserve space allocated but without snapshots or schedules). By default, the feature is enabled for the entire group but the global administrator can disable the feature if unnecessary.
Support for Smart Tags:
Smart Tags are part of the continuing effort to make storage management easier by extending management-in-scale capabilities. By allowing a storage manager to “tag” volume objects in the storage group with a user supplied or application-generated string, management applications will be able to easily locate groups of volumes that require attention or management.
Virtual Volumes Support:
vSphere Virtual Volumes solution with Dell EqualLogic PS Series can make operations like single VM snapshot-restores nearly instantaneous. It transforms the PS Series from a LUN-centric to a truly VM-aware storage solution by providing data services and data placement at the VM-level. Coupled with the PS Series dynamic page balancing, it provides a highly optimized cost/performance/capacity solution.

  • Support for VMware Virtual Volumes, providing granular per virtual machine (VM) data services
  • Support for VASA 2.0
  • Support for EqualLogic Array Software 8.0 features, including VMware Virtual Volumes and the new EqualLogic PS4210 and PS6610 Series arrays
  • Deep integration with vSphere Web Client
  • Support for VMware vSphere 6.0

Enablement of VMware Virtual Volumes
vSphere 6.0 introduces the biggest change to the VMware storage stack since the company’s inception. With Virtual Volumes support, the PS Series is shifting from a datastore or volume-centric model to a per virtual machine model. Previously a VM, which consisted of a collection of files on a datastore, was backed by a volume on the array. With Virtual Volumes, a VM now consists of a group of volumes on the array, thus enabling the offloading to the array of several VMware operations:

  • VMware snapshots are now array- based snapshots that can be kept indefinitely and restored from within seconds.
  • Virtual machine deployment tasks which previously took minutes, are now completed in seconds.
  • Array side storage metrics can now be mapped to individual VMs and individual virtual disks, enabling both vSphere and Storage administrators to use their preferred tool for performance diagnostics.
  • Storage administrators gain visibility to per VM and per virtual disks storage consumption.
Consistent data protection with VSM and traditional datastores
VSM offers high-performance, space-efficient data protection of VMware VMs and datastores within folders and clusters. It enables you to perform VM-based snapshot and restore operations in addition to traditional datastore-based snapshot, restore, failover and failback operations on Dell EqualLogic PS Groups. VSM enables users to configure replication from top to bottom all in a single interface. Version 4.5 enhances the historical view of system and data protection scheduling with scheduling templates that may be used for both snapshot and replication operations. The resulting snapshots, replicas and clones can now be more easily and rapidly created, managed and recovered. All of these features allow VSM to enhance the protection, storage utilization and performance of VMware-based virtual infrastructures.
Storage Recovery Replicas provide a simplified storage recovery solution across single and multi-site vCenter installations managing multiple EqualLogic groups. This feature delivers a simpler mechanism for replication of one or more datastores that can be stored on one or more PS series groups to a secondary PS series group, potentially at a geographically remote location, using just one VSM and vCenter server for disaster tolerance. VSM also offers recovery from replicas on secondary sites, including failover and failback of virtual machines and their data. VSM>Datastore Management
Managing datastores has traditionally been a tedious process because IT managers have had to separately provision volumes in the array and then create and manage datastores in vSphere. VSM unifies these two steps into one UI by automating storage provisioning, thereby simplifying the datastore creation and management process. You can create, manage, and monitor datastores on Dell EqualLogic PS Series and FS Series arrays from within a single VSM table. Datastore management can:
  • Help simplify datastores provisioning and management as well as storage-usage monitoring in the VMware vSphere client.
  • Offer selective restoration of virtual objects and datastores through a selective restore of VMs from snapshots that include multiple objects. Only the selected VMs are restored.
  • Streamline management of access control for datastores, which helps to better secure data. Access Control Policies can be defined for datastores and also be cloned and deployed on multiple datastores. A cluster-based ACL generator has been added to take advantage of Access Control Policies within EqualLogic array software 7.0 and assist with cluster changes.
  • Help you create, resize and delete FS series datastores (containers and the NFS exports) from vCenter.
EqualLogic VASA Provider
EqualLogic VASA (vSphere API for Storage Awareness) Provider tightly integrates EqualLogic with vSphere, providing an end-to-end storage capability view of EqualLogic storage in the vSphere UI. This provides better storage allocation and management, all from a familiar interface. Through this integration with VSM, Dell EqualLogic PS series arrays can pass storage attributes, alarms and events to VMware vSphere, so you can view additional details about the storage array’s capabilities, including:
  • Support for VMware Virtual Volumes
  • End-to-end EqualLogic storage visibility to the VMware users
  • Support for VMware Storage Profiles
  • EqualLogic storage array events and alarms for critical events related to space, capacity allocation and accessibility that are available within vCenter UI
  • Storage capability view for datastores — vSphere users can see the EqualLogic storage array RAID mix, snapshots, replication and the solid-state drive (SSD) mix for each datastore
  • Integration with Storage Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS)— VASA interacts with VMware Storage DRS to ensure that VMs only move datastores when there is a performance gain given the characteristics of EqualLogic storage
EqualLogic Storage Replication Adapter for VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRA SRM)
EqualLogic SRA SRM integrates VMware vCenter SRM with EqualLogic storage arrays through vStorage APIs and offers centralized automated disaster recovery management, automation and testing for the entire virtualized data center. With SRA SRM, VMware SRM utilizes the EqualLogic SAN-based replication feature, making disaster recovery manageable, reliable and affordable.
EqualLogic Adapter for vRealize Operations Manager
The EqualLogic Adapter for vRealize Operations (formerly vCenter Operations) Manager integrates EqualLogic storage with vCenter Operations Management Suite. This integration allows vRealize Operations to assimilate EqualLogic storage metrics in its operations management tasks. Through this integration, VMware administrators can gain comprehensive insights on the capacity, performance and health of EqualLogic storage with alerts and metrics provided by the adapter. This allows administrators to incorporate EqualLogic storage into their overall IT operations and management practices, and helps simplify infrastructure complexity. It also enables administrators to perform long-term>EqualLogic MPIO enables intelligent and dynamic routing of your iSCSI SAN traffic load over multiple network paths between the server and the EqualLogic PS series group.
