Answer:

A 64 bit version of PDF-XChange Viewer/PDF-XChange Editor is being used in conjunction with a version of MS Outlook older than Office 2010.

MS Outlook versions prior to Office 2010 are available only in 32 bit - even when they are used on 64 bit PCs. This results in compatibility issues when 64 bit version of our products are used, in particular with the Shell Extensions provided for preview/search options. We have taken significant measures to resolve this issue - please see below.

The following steps re-register the DLLs and rectify the problem in most cases:

1. Uninstall all PDF-XChange applications.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Download and reinstall the latest versions of the products, which are available here.

If you would rather re-register the Shell Extensions without having to reinstall the products, detailed instructions are available here.

If the steps above do not resolve the issue then please contact us and with the following information:

  • The version of Windows in use, and whether it is 32 or 64 bit.
  • The version of MS Office in use.
  • The name of the installer file used, for example PDFXVwer.zip
  • The serial key details.

1. Click Help in the Menu Toolbar.

2. Click Report a Problem.

3. Enter the details of your case and report it to Tracker Software.

Hi, I'm using Windows 7 64-bit and Outlook 2013.

I have a slightly annoying problem. I cannot preview pdf files through Outlook in my emails and have to double-click each attachment to open in Acrobat. When I try to preview the file within Outlook, I get the following message:

'This file cannot be previewed because of an error with the following previewer: PDF Preview Handler

To open this file in it's own program, double-click it.'

This first happened with Adobe Reader, but I've installed both Adobe Acrobat and Foxit Reader as well and the same result occurs. So this isn't a problem with the Adobe program, but probably with Window's service of PDF Preview Handler.

Also I found that pdf files cannot be previewed in Windows Explorer in the preview plane, instead I get the following message:

'This file can't be previewed'

I've searched this problem across the internet and I've tried all the methods but it doesn't work. I've tried the methods described in http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7682/how-to-fix-pdf-previews-in-outlook-or-explorer-on-64-bit-windows/ like installing the Adobe Reader preview handler x64 fixer program and changing the registry value in AppID to {534A1E02-D58F-44f0-B58B-36CBED287C7C} however the value already was like that from the start and therefore this method did not work. Though this is probably not a problem with Outlook (as this issue is also with Windows Explorer) I cleared the Outlook temp folder at %userprofile%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.Outlook however this didn't change anything.
