'vCenter Operations Manager (vCOPS) automates operations management using patented analytics and an integrated approach to performance, capacity and configuration management.' I'm my words. VCOPS provides integrated, intelligent monitoring of the entire virtual (or cloud) environment. VCenter Operations Manager uses one vCenter Server as the license server When you license vCenter Operations Manager, only one vCenter Server is used. The selection process for choosing a license uses the following rules: The vCenter Server with license key that has the highest edition (Enterprise Advanced Standard).
vRealize Operations is available standalone and bundled with various VMware suites. Refer to the edition comparison table to understand the different product editions. There are three licensing models.
- Portable licensing units: This is the licensing metric for vCloud Suite and vRealize Suite.
- Per processor with unlimited VMs: This is the licensing metric for the following standalone products: vRealize Operations Standard, Advanced and Enterprise editions and vRealize Log Insight.
- Per virtual machine or operating system instance: This is the licensing metric for the following standalone products: vRealize Operations Standard, Advanced and Enterprise editions and vRealize Log Insight.
VRealize Operations Advanced and Enterprise editions can be mixed on a single vRealize Operations Manager cluster. This is to allow you to use vRealize Operations Advanced to manage your entire estate and have a subset, perhaps your business critical applications, managed with the additional functionality provided by vRealize Operations Enterprise. VCenter Operations Manager, without a license key, i.e., eval mode, automatically defaults to Foundation license mode. VMware vRealize Configuration Manager is no longer included in vRealize Operations Advanced or Enterprise editions. It is also not included in vRealize or vCloud Suites. vRealize Configuration Manager is available as a separate standalone offering.

Operations Manager Indeed
So I've hit a brick wall, and I've found conflicting info on VMwares website. I currently work with a ESXi 5.5 u3 environment, we have a vCenter standard license, but our hosts (5 of them) have vSphere w/ Operations Management 5.5 enterprise plus licenses, and I have assigned the same license to vCOPs and done a refresh via SSH to the UI VM..But when I try and access https://<server_IP)/vcops-custom/ , I attempt to login and am met with 'This product is unlicensed or cannot connect to the vSphere Server. Use a vSphere Client to connect to the vCenter Server and assign a license key.' which is making me think our vCenter license needs to be different, somehow. In vCOPs 'About' drop down it shows 'standard' license when from what I have read it should said 'Advanced' or 'Enterprise'.

Full disclosure, no one I work with knows anything about what licensing we do or do not have for VMware, nor do they know this vCOPs custom UI exists...I was told by management to tie in hyperic for VM monitoring, and while doing so, it seems the vCOPs custom UI is needed, and which I attempt to load it, and am met with the above.
